The bubble umbrella is a specific type of umbrella intended to
protect the user from the elements. It is used in the same way as the more commonly seen traditional umbrella.
However, the bubble umbrella is domed-shaped, usually with a curved handle.
These umbrellas have more of an “old fashioned,” or vintage look
than the common modern umbrella and are often used by fashionable individuals looking for a visually interesting
alternative to the traditional umbrella shape.
The bubble umbrella covers the shoulders and head like a typical
umbrella and can include a manual opening and closing mechanism or an automatic one. Some opening mechanisms will
provide pinch-proof protection, while the older models will not.
What sets the bubble umbrella apart is that it curves more sharply
at the top, creating more of a “u” shape than the common umbrella.
This means that the umbrella is better suited to single use rather
than shared use, but it also provides a deeper coverage. It is usually carried lower over the body than the
traditional umbrella because of its shape.
The bubble umbrella is most commonly seen in
clear vinyl, which adds to the unique style of the umbrella, but can also been seen in a variety of fabric
designs.
A clear
vinyl umbrella may be left plain or may include a colored band with a matching handle, a design
such as polka dots or stripes or may use an image such as flowers or rainbows.
The purpose of clear vinyl is to allow this type of umbrella to be covered low over the body without
obstructing vision.
However, solid bubble umbrellas are a pleasing alternative to the
traditional clear and are just as usable as the clear fabric. Solid umbrellas may be vinyl, PVC or
nylon.
The handle on the bubble umbrella is
traditionally curved, also known as the crook shape. This provides the user with a convenient grip that allows
different angles and directions in use.
Handles may be solid metal all the way from top to bottom or they
may include a plastic or leather handle at the crook.
This handle may match the umbrella cover or may compliment it. It
can also be left plain white or black.
The mechanics of the umbrella work in the same way that a
traditional umbrella does with the folding arms made from a light metal or plastic. They can be closed for
convenient portability and typically will come with their own cover for use when being stored.
